Exploration cruises of the Sepik River and Trobriand Islands
24 twin and double lower cabins, all with private bathrooms. The cabins have large picture windows to make the most of the spectacular scenery, ample storage space, telephone, music system and a colour television for in-house movies and daily event programmes. The restaurant converts into a lecture theatre and limited a la carte and buffet meals are available. The main observation lounge is on the bridge deck, which has a cocktail bar, piano and luxurious seating for up to 50 passengers. The ship is air-conditioned with individual temperature controls, international telex, telephone and facsimile services. The Melanesian Discoverer is operated under Bureau Veritas Survey and manned to International Standard with mainly PNG officers and crew. It is the only tourist vessel in PNG that is maintained in international survey.

Melanesian Tourist Services is the oldest and largest tourist organization in PNG. It owns and operates the luxurious "Melanesian Discoverer" ship that operates expeditionary cruises along the full length of the mighty Sepik River and along the North Coast of Papua New Guinea between Alotau and Vanimo with once monthly extension to Irian Jaya in Indonesia. The island cruises visit Wewak, Mandang, Manam Is, Siassi Is, New Ireland, Rabaul, Witu, Trobriand Islands, Marshall Bennett Group, D'entrcastreaux Group and Alotau.

Melanesian also owns the historic Madang Resort Hotel, a four star international resort in Madang and the Malagan Lodge in Kavieng. The company is planning a new hotel at Rabaul to be built in the near future.

Melanesian provides a full inbound tour service for overland tours and expeditions and shore excursions for visiting cruise ships to all PNG ports.

Air Niugini, the national carrier of Papua New Guinea, commenced operations in 1973 with a fleet of twelve DC3's and six F27's.

Today Air Niugini has a fleet of five F28-1000, three F28-4000, two DASH 7's and two Airbus A310-300. They operate to 20 ports within Papua New Guinea and internationally to Brisbane, Sydney and Cairns in Australia, Hong Kong, Manila, Singapore, Honiara and Jayapura.
